Reports: Aretha Franklin has pancreatic cancer

December 8, 2010

I hope this is not true.
Just a week after living Legend Aretha Franklin’s prayer vigil and surgery, media outlets are reporting that the singer has pancreatic cancer.

The National Enquirer (via PopCrunch) claims in its report that doctors made the diagnosis after Franklin broke her ribs in a shower fall over the summer.

The Detroit News cited a source familiar with the situation in a report on its web site, pointing out that the illness has a poor prognosis.

Reuters also reports that a Fox television station in Detroit has the news, citing a close relative of the “Queen of Soul” as the source. The report said she was doing “OK.”

Franklin has canceled all appearances through May 2011, but she’s not commented about specifics regarding the reasons for the cancellations or the surgery.

After the prayer vigil in Detroit, the Motown singer thanked the City Council in a statement, saying “all prayers are good.”

The Rev. Jesse Jackson said in an interview with The Associated Press Wednesday that he’s visited with the legendary singer four or five times recently, including a few days ago, and that Franklin’s “spirits are high, and her faith is strong.”

“She’s conscious, communicating and taking daily walks up and down the hall,” said Jackson, who accompanied Franklin on one of those walks during his most recent visit. “She has amazing strength — body, religion and faith,” Jackson told the AP. “It’s what keeps her going.”
